FIFA World Cup 2026 Brackets: How Spain Conquered Them

Published: 21 October 2026 · Updated: 21 October 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is over. It was played from 11 June to 19 July 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the United States, and it ended with Spain beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July 2026. Ferran Torres scored the only goal, in the 106th minute. This page explains how the 2026 bracket worked and records the knockout results that have been verified, round by round, without inventing the rest.

The 2026 tournament was the largest World Cup ever played. Forty-eight teams took part, up from 32 at Qatar 2022, and the expanded field changed the bracket itself: twelve groups, a new round of 32, and then the familiar rounds to the final.

How the 2026 bracket was built

The 48 teams were drawn into twelve groups of four, Groups A to L. Each team played the other three teams in its group once, so the group stage produced 72 matches. The top two teams in each group qualified automatically for the knockout stage. They were joined by the eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups, giving a knockout field of 32 teams. That is why the 2026 bracket began with a round of 32 rather than a round of 16, and why the eventual champions had to win five knockout ties, and play eight matches in total, instead of the four knockout ties and seven matches required in the old 32-team format.

From the round of 32 onwards the tournament was single elimination: lose once and you were out, except that the two losing semi-finalists met in a third-place match. Drawn ties went to extra time and then penalties. The 104 matches broke down as 72 group matches, 16 in the round of 32, eight in the round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals, one third-place match and the final.

How to read a World Cup bracket

A bracket is read from the outside in. On the left are the earliest knockout ties; each winner moves one column to the right, and the two winners who survive to the centre contest the final. Third-place group finishers complicate the picture, because which group winners they face depends on which groups produce the best third-placed teams, so the round-of-32 pairings were only fixed once the group stage was complete. That is also why a bracket printed before the tournament can show the structure but not the actual ties: the structure is fixed, the pairings are earned.

Use this page in two steps. First, use the structure above to understand where any team stood. Second, use the verified results table below for the two finalists and the third-place match. Other scores circulate online, but they are not reproduced here unless they can be checked against a reliable source, because a wrong score in a bracket is worse than a gap honestly labelled.

Verified knockout results: Spain's road to the title

Spain finished first in Group H, with two wins and a draw, and won all five knockout ties. They beat Austria in the round of 32, Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16 (Mikel Merino, in second-half stoppage time), and Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-final (Fabian Ruiz, Charles De Ketelaere's equaliser, Merino again in the 88th minute). That Belgium goal was the only goal Spain conceded all tournament. In the semi-final they beat France 2-0 (Mikel Oyarzabal penalty, 22nd minute; Pedro Porro, 58th).

The final, on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium, finished goalless after 90 minutes. Argentina were reduced to ten men late in regulation when Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card. Ferran Torres, a substitute, scored the winner in the 106th minute, after Nico Williams headed a cross from Pedro Porro back across goal. Spain won 1-0 and lifted their second World Cup, sixteen years after South Africa 2010. See our Spain champions 2026 final report.

Verified knockout results: Argentina's road to the final

Argentina, the defending champions from Qatar 2022, finished first in Group J with three wins. In the round of 32 they beat Cape Verde, in the round of 16 they beat Egypt, and in the quarter-final they beat Switzerland. In the semi-final they beat England 2-1, with Enzo Fernández scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time. Both finalists therefore won their group and then won four knockout ties to reach MetLife Stadium.

The day before the final, England beat France 6-4 in the third-place match in Miami on 18 July 2026. Kylian Mbappé scored twice for France, taking him to ten for the tournament and settling the Golden Boot race.

What this bracket page does not claim

This page deliberately does not print a complete 32-team bracket with every score. Only the results in the table above are stated here, because those are the ones verified for this page from the sources below. Scores for other ties are omitted rather than guessed, and where a tie is given without a score, that means the winner is verified but the exact score was not confirmed for this page. Readers who want the full fixture list and group standings should also check our complete 2026 World Cup fixture guide and the Golden Boot scoring table, and our English home page for more tournament coverage in English.

One warning applies to any bracket you find online. Because the 2026 format was new, many pre-tournament graphics show pairings that never happened. A bracket is only trustworthy if it matches the structure here — twelve groups, eight best third-placed teams, a round of 32 — and if its final reads Spain 1-0 Argentina, Ferran Torres in the 106th minute.

Why the 2026 bracket mattered

The extra round changed strategy: a third-place group finish was no longer elimination, so final group matches kept more teams alive. At the same time, the champions' workload grew to eight matches in 39 days across three countries. Spain's achievement — unbeaten, one goal conceded — is best understood against that workload.

The lesson of 2026 is that the bracket itself is part of the story: it decides how many chances a team gets and whether a third-place finish is a failure or a lifeline. Spain used every part of that structure, from a controlled group stage to five straight knockout wins.
