Egypt's Dream Run: History Made at World Cup 2026

Published · Updated

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is over. Egypt, the Pharaohs, played only their fourth men's World Cup — and their first since 2018 — and produced the best tournament in the country's history: a first-ever World Cup victory, a first-ever place in the knockout rounds, and a first-ever knockout win, before going out in the round of 16. This page tells that story with only the results that have been independently verified for this assignment, and it says plainly which results have been left out.

Egypt's qualification alone was a statement: first in their African qualifying group with eight wins and two draws, 26 points, 20 goals scored and only two conceded, with Salah scoring nine goals.

The coach behind that identity was Hossam Hassan, appointed in February 2024, working with his twin brother Ibrahim Hassan as team director. Hassan delivered what no previous Egypt coach had managed: a World Cup win, a knockout win, and a round-of-16 tie against the champions.

A historic first win: Egypt 3-1 New Zealand

Egypt entered the 2026 tournament with no victory in seven previous World Cup matches, in 1934, 1990 and 2018. That record ended on 21 June 2026 at BC Place in Vancouver, where Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 in their second group match, after trailing 1-0 at half-time. It was the first time the Pharaohs had ever won a match at the finals.

The knockout breakthrough: beating Australia on penalties

The expanded 2026 format, with 48 teams and a round of 32, gave Egypt a new opportunity, and Egypt took it. In the round of 32, Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, registering their first-ever World Cup knockout victory.

Egypt's win was also a product of discipline: a team that had conceded only two goals in ten qualifying matches knew how to stay in a tie and hold its nerve when the match went to spot-kicks.

The round of 16: Argentina 3-2 Egypt

Egypt's tournament ended in the round of 16 against the defending champions, Argentina, on 7 July 2026 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Argentina won 3-2, but Egypt led 2-0 before Argentina scored three times in 13 minutes, with Enzo Fernández heading the winner in the 92nd minute.

That controversy is part of the story. Egypt had a goal by Mostafa Zico disallowed while leading 1-0, after the video assistant referee went back to an earlier foul in the move; Zico later scored again to make it 2-0. Later, Mohamed Salah went down under a challenge from Julián Álvarez in Argentina's penalty area, and another incident involving Alexis Mac Allister was also disputed, but neither led to an on-field video review. Argentina broke upfield and Fernández scored the winner. After the match, Hassan and Zico criticised the refereeing strongly, and in October 2026 FIFA handed Hassan a three-match suspension and Zico a five-match suspension for their comments.

None of that changes the result: Argentina won 3-2 and went on to reach the final, where they lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute. But leading the defending champions 2-0 and losing only to a stoppage-time winner is why this tournament is remembered in Egypt as a breakthrough, not a failure.

Key players

Mohamed Salah, captain and symbol

Salah is Egypt's most internationally recognised player of his generation, and the reason millions followed Egypt's matches. With Liverpool he had become one of the best forwards in Europe; for Egypt he was captain, leading scorer in qualifying with nine goals, and the player opponents planned around.

Hossam Hassan, the coach

Hassan's achievement was to turn a good qualifying team into a tournament team: organised, hard to score against, and strong in spirit. After the World Cup, the Egyptian Football Association extended the contracts of Hassan and his brother Ibrahim.

Zico, Ashour, Marmoush and the next generation

If Salah was the symbol, the supporting cast was the future. Mostafa Zico scored against Argentina; Emam Ashour and Omar Marmoush gave Egypt pace and goals; and goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir, defenders Ramy Rabia and Mohamed Abdelmoneim, and midfielders Marawan Attia and Mohanad Lashin formed a spine that was difficult to break down.

Egypt's long World Cup history

Egypt's World Cup story began before almost anyone else's in Africa: they were the first African nation at a men's World Cup, in Italy in 1934. They did not return for 56 years, until Italy again in 1990, and in Russia in 2018, with Salah carrying an injury, Egypt lost all three group matches.

That history makes 2026's breakthrough easier to understand. Egypt are the most successful team in African Cup of Nations history, with seven titles, yet had never won at a World Cup. In 2026 they closed part of that gap.

What 2026 means for Egypt

The most concrete legacy of 2026 is the contract extension for Hassan and his brother, and the raised expectations that came with it. The next target, in post-tournament reporting, is African Cup of Nations glory with Salah and the next generation — a tournament Egypt have won more than anyone, but not since 2010.

The less concrete legacy is belief. Young Egyptian players now grow up knowing Egypt can win a World Cup match and a knockout tie, and can lead the champions 2-0. Spain won the 2026 World Cup. Egypt did not, but left with a World Cup history worth celebrating.
