Cristiano Ronaldo: profile and career

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, born on 5 February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, is one of the greatest footballers in history and, as of October 2026, still an active professional at the age of 41. He plays as a forward for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia and captains the Portugal national team. His career has lasted more than two decades, taken him through four of Europe's biggest leagues, and produced five Ballon d'Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, and the men's world record for international goals. This is an overview of that career and of where he stands now. For full numbers, see our Cristiano Ronaldo stats guide, and for his goals in detail, see our Ronaldo goals guide.
Madeira childhood and Sporting CP
Ronaldo grew up in Funchal, on the Portuguese island of Madeira, as the youngest of four children in a family with little money. His mother worked as a cook and cleaner, and his father worked as a municipal gardener and part-time kit man at the local club, Andorinha. He played for Andorinha and then for Nacional as a boy, and at the age of 12 he left Madeira alone to join Sporting CP in Lisbon, after the club signed him for a fee reported at around 1,500 pounds. It was a wrenching move for a child, and it is the part of his story that explains the discipline that has defined everything since: he was not the most naturally gifted child in the academy, but he trained longer and harder than anyone else, and by 17 he had made his senior debut for Sporting.
That debut season, 2002-03, changed his life in a single match. In a friendly against Manchester United in Lisbon in August 2003, Ronaldo tormented United's defence, and United's players are widely reported to have urged manager Sir Alex Ferguson to sign him on the flight home. Within days he was a Manchester United player, the club's first Portuguese signing, handed the famous number 7 shirt previously worn by George Best and David Beckham.
Manchester United: the making of a superstar
Ronaldo's first spell at Manchester United, from 2003 to 2009, turned a dazzling but raw winger into the best player in the world. The early years were uneven: he dazzled and frustrated in equal measure, held on to the ball too long, and was targeted physically by defenders. Ferguson's coaching, and Ronaldo's own relentless work on strength and finishing, changed that. By the 2006-07 season he was unplayable in the Premier League, and in 2007-08 he delivered one of the great individual seasons in English football history, scoring 42 goals in all competitions from the wing, winning the Premier League and the Champions League, and claiming his first Ballon d'Or in 2008.
He won three Premier League titles at United, in 2007, 2008 and 2009, plus the FA Cup in 2004 and the League Cup, and reached a second consecutive Champions League final in 2009, losing to Barcelona in Rome. By the time he left, he had scored more than 100 goals for the club and had outgrown the league that made him. The transfer that followed, to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 for a then world-record fee of 94 million euros, was the biggest move of its era.
Real Madrid: nine years of records
At Real Madrid, from 2009 to 2018, Ronaldo became the club's all-time top scorer, with more than 450 goals in 438 appearances, a scoring rate that no previous Madrid great had approached. He won two La Liga titles, in 2012 and 2017, and four Champions League titles, in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, the last three in consecutive seasons as part of a team that dominated Europe. He won four more Ballon d'Or awards in Madrid, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, taking his total to five, and his rivalry with Lionel Messi at Barcelona defined a decade of football, with the two players pushing each other's scoring to levels never seen before.
His Madrid years also changed his game. He arrived as a winger who beat defenders with step-overs and pace, and he left as a penalty-box striker whose movement, heading and finishing made him almost impossible to mark. The free kicks and long-range strikes remained, but the defining Madrid image is Ronaldo rising above a defence to head a cross home, or arriving late at the far post to finish a move he had started. Juventus, a return to United, and Al Nassr
In 2018, at the age of 33, Ronaldo joined Juventus, seeking a new challenge in Serie A. He scored 101 goals in 134 matches for the Italian club and won two Serie A titles, in 2019 and 2020, remaining the highest earner in the league's history and its most prolific scorer during his stay. In 2021 he returned to Manchester United for a second spell, which began brightly but ended unhappily: a public falling-out with the club's management in late 2022 led to his contract being terminated by mutual agreement in November 2022.
What followed surprised many observers and reshaped football's economy. In January 2023 Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, becoming the first global superstar of his stature to move to Saudi Arabia at the peak of his fame, if past his physical peak. The move opened the door for a wave of high-profile transfers to the Saudi league, and Ronaldo has remained its defining player since. In June 2025 he extended his Al Nassr contract to 2027, and as of October 2026 he continues to play and score for the club. Portugal: captain, champion, record-breaker
Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal in 2003 and has been the national team's captain since 2008. He is Portugal's all-time leader in both appearances and goals, and he holds the men's world record for international goals, a record he extended year after year into his late thirties. His defining international achievement came at Euro 2016 in France, where Portugal won their first major trophy despite Ronaldo being forced off injured early in the final against the hosts; he led from the touchline as Eder's extra-time goal sealed the title. He added the inaugural UEFA Nations League title in 2019, and he became the first player to score at five different World Cups, from Germany 2006 through Qatar 2022.
That longevity is the most remarkable part of the international story. Most forwards are finished at international level by 35. Ronaldo was still Portugal's captain and first-choice striker well past 40, and his international career alone, spanning more than two decades, would be enough to make him a national hero. For his Portugal career in full, see our Ronaldo with Portugal guide.
Playing style
Ronaldo's style has been reinvented several times, which is a large part of why his career has lasted so long. As a teenager he was a pure dribbler, all pace, step-overs and tricks. At his Manchester United peak he combined that dribbling with power, free-kick technique and a growing eye for goal. At Real Madrid he became a complete forward: devastating in the air, lethal with both feet, and brilliant at finding space in the box rather than demanding the ball to feet. At Juventus and Al Nassr he has played almost entirely as a central striker, conserving energy for the moments that decide matches and relying on positioning and finishing rather than sustained dribbling.
Physically, he is listed at 1.87 metres (6 feet 2 inches), and his athleticism has always been central to his game: his leap, his sprint speed in his prime, and above all his conditioning. He has been famous throughout his career for the discipline of his training, diet and recovery, and that discipline, more than any single skill, is what has allowed a player who debuted in 2002 to still be scoring professionally in 2026.
Age, height and current status
As of October 2026, Ronaldo is 41 years old, having turned 41 on 5 February 2026. His height is listed at 1.87 metres, and he wears the number 7 shirt for Al Nassr, as he has for most of his career. He remains under contract at Al Nassr until 2027 following his June 2025 extension, and he remains Portugal's captain. He is also, by Forbes' estimates, the highest-paid footballer in the world and, since June 2026, a billionaire by Forbes' estimated net worth of $1.2 billion, a subject covered separately in our guides to his salary and net worth. Exact career goal totals change with every match and are covered in our dedicated goals guide rather than frozen here, where they would be out of date within days.
Partner and family
Ronaldo's long-term partner is Georgina Rodriguez, with whom he has two daughters, Alana Martina and Bella Esmeralda. He has five children in total: his eldest son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., who is himself a youth footballer at Al Nassr and the subject of our dedicated Cristiano Ronaldo Jr profile, twins Eva and Mateo, and his two daughters with Rodriguez. Family life has been a visible part of his public image for a decade, and Rodriguez is covered in full in our Ronaldo wife and partner guide. This profile keeps the family section brief by design: the dedicated articles carry the detail.
Legacy
Ronaldo's legacy rests on three things that no other player combines in the same way. First, longevity at the very top: more than twenty years between his senior debut and his forties, across four leagues and with a national team he carried to its first trophies. Second, scoring at a scale that rewrote the record books, for club and country, in league football and in the Champions League. Third, a global cultural reach beyond football, built on his brand, his social media following, which is the largest of any individual on Instagram, and his status as a figure recognised far beyond the sport's usual audience. Whether he is ranked first or second among all-time greats is a debate that will run for generations, and it is a debate his career, more than any argument, has earned.
